Maharajji in the form of Neem Karoli Baba could be described as a hobo or a tramp. He certainly was a divine renunciate. Maharajji is a sadhu. Maharajji had nothing and Maharajji had everything. Maharajji lived as a person who was very poor but Maharajji was very rich in the sense that whatever Maharajji summoned simply appeared as necessary. Maharajji was quoted as saying, “All the money in the world is mine, even the money in America.”
The devotees of Maharajji in India believe that Maharajji is the direct manifestation of the Hindu God Hanuman. There is a story of Maharajji wherein He appears to Dada as Hanuman in such a way that He seems to have blown Dada’s mind out for some time. In one case Maharajji was speaking about Hanuman and referred to Hanuman saying the “I” pronoun in place of Hanuman. There is a story where Maharajji’s palms and soles of His feet turned red like Hanuman. Also cited are stories of how much Maharajji loved to climb in the trees, and there is in fact a tree remaining in Akbarpur4 that the villagers say Maharajji frequently climbed.
Mukunda wrote in Prem Avatar, “Shri Baba Neem Karoli Maharaj was the manifestation of God or the incarnation himself. He was the paramGuru, he was the absolute God or complete being, he was the treasury of grace, of kindness, of forgiveness, and he was the very fountain of blissful love for God. He was also the giver of that blissful love for God to others.”
